How to Choose Virtual Try-On Software: A Buyer's Guide

The differences surface after you sign: whether the body model resembles your shoppers, how many weeks your catalog takes to onboard, what the integration costs your engineering team, and where a shopper's face photo ends up. The evaluation criteria below are ordered by how expensive each one is to fix later. What Virtual Try-On Software Does

A virtual try-on tool shows a shopper a specific garment on a body model built from their own selfie or measurements, in place of a model shot and a size chart. Ask the vendor: show me two shoppers at the same height and weight with different proportions, in the same garment and size. If the renders are interchangeable, you are looking at a size bucket.

Integration and Platform Fit

Regarding integration, there are two questions to be answered here. How does the try-on experience reach the product page, and how do garment assets reach the vendor? The first is an app, an embed or an API call, and the effort scales with how custom your storefront is. The second gets underestimated: a vendor with no path into your PLM system means someone on your side exports files by hand for every drop.

Ask the vendor: what does the storefront integration look like on our stack, and how do new-season assets get to you without a person emailing zip files?

Speed and Rendering Quality

Shoppers will wait a few seconds, not thirty. Ask where the render happens and how long it takes, separating first-time shoppers, who have to submit a photo or measurements, from returning ones with a saved profile.

Shopper selfies and body measurements need to be handled in line with GDPR, and how a given system processes facial images can affect which obligations apply. Where your specific deployment lands is a question for your legal team, so the useful thing you can do is bring them the detail: how the vendor processes this data and on what legal basis, where photos and measurements are stored, in which region, for how long, whether they are used to train models, which sub-processors touch them, what technical and organizational measures are in place to protect the data, and whether a shopper can delete a saved profile without contacting support.

Ask the vendor: send us your DPA, your retention schedule, your sub-processor list and your position on training data before the second call.

Analytics and Reporting

Try-on generates behavioral data you cannot get anywhere else: which sizes shoppers compared before ordering, which garments they abandoned after seeing them on their own body, which categories drive repeat use. A vendor returning a usage count and nothing else leaves all of that on the table. Check that the events reach your own analytics stack instead of living only in a vendor dashboard. Virtual Try-On Software Pricing: What to Expect

Four pricing models dominate this category, and most vendors combine two of them.

  • Per-SKU onboarding. A one-off fee per garment built, sometimes tiered by complexity. Predictable, and it scales with catalog size instead of traffic.

  • Usage-based. A fee per render, per session or per active shopper. Cheap during a pilot, and the line item to model carefully before a peak season.

  • Flat platform fee. An annual or monthly licence covering a defined SKU ceiling and render volume, with overages above it.

  • Per-seat. Common where merchandising teams use the tool internally, rare as the main lever for consumer-facing deployment.

Compare total first-year cost: the licence, plus onboarding labour on your side, plus the engineering days to integrate, divided across the SKUs that go live. Two quotes with the same headline price diverge fast once one of them needs your team to shoot new photography or re-export patterns by hand. Any figure quoted before a vendor knows your catalog size, input-data quality and render volume is guesswork, so ask for a quote against your real SKU count and your real traffic and ask which parts of it are fixed.

Red Flags to Watch For When Evaluating Vendors

  • Generic avatars sold as personalized. If the shopper's input changes the label on the image and not the shape of the body in it, the product is a size chart with a picture attached.

  • The same hero garment in every demo. One well-built style proves one style was well built.

  • Returns-impact claims with no methodology. A vendor quoting a percentage reduction should be able to say over what period, against what baseline, in which categories, and what else changed on the site at the same time.

  • An integration estimate given before a scoping call. "Two weeks," offered without knowing your stack, is a sales number.

  • Vagueness about photo storage. A vendor who cannot say where shopper images sit and for how long has not been asked by anyone serious.

  • Refusal to run your files in a pilot. A vendor confident in their reconstruction will build one of your styles from your own pattern file before you sign.

  • Show the same garment at your smallest and largest supported size. Are the proportions graded, or scaled?

  • What do you need from us per style, and what happens when a file is missing?

  • What is the per-SKU cost and the per-render cost, at our volume?

  • How long from contract signature to the first SKU live on our site?

  • Where are shopper photos and measurements stored, for how long, and are they used for training?

  • What event data do we get back, and can we export it?

  • Which of your named clients runs this across a full catalog, not a capsule, and can we speak to them?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is virtual try-on software worth it for small catalogs?

It can be. With 50 SKUs, onboarding cost is low and the coverage problem disappears, so the question is whether your return rate and average order value justify the platform fee. Categories with high fit uncertainty, such as tailoring, denim and occasionwear, clear that bar sooner than loose-fit basics.

How long does implementation usually take?

Storefront integration is typically days to a few weeks, depending on how custom the product page is. Garment onboarding is the longer pole, and it depends on whether your pattern, grading and material data is complete and in one place. Brands with organized PLM data move considerably faster than brands whose grading rules live in a supplier's spreadsheet.

Does virtual try-on work for all garment types?

It depends. Structured and woven garments reconstruct well from pattern data. Heavily draped, sheer and highly technical pieces are harder, and knitwear behaves differently from cut-and-sew fabric under simulation. Ask for examples in your hardest category before assuming coverage is uniform.
